SCIENTISTS in Idaho, USA, have developed an artificial beak for an injured Alaskan bald eagle, and plan to attach the invention this month.
Seven-year-old eagle Beauty has lost the top half of her beak due to a gunshot wound, meaning she has trouble eating, drinking and preening her feathers. Her handlers at the raptor recovery centre liken it to "using one chopstick to eat".
Biologists spent two years perfecting the nylon-composite replacement, which will be glued on in the next few weeks.
