2000 tonnes electrical goods recycled

More than 2000 tonnes of unwanted electrical equipment have been sent for recycling in South Lanarkshire in the past year - that's an impressive 6.8kg per head of population.

And that's more than 1.5 times the target of 4kg set following the introduction of the European Parliament's Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations in July 2007!

Councillor Gerry Convery, the chair of the council's Community Resources Committee, said: "The success of domestic and the electrical recycling is a great tribute to the people in South Lanarkshire who have, from day one, taken on board all of the council's recycling initiatives with great enthusiasm.

"The reality is that household recycling is not just the way forward - more and more people are recognising that in terms of the threat of global warming recycling is crucial to our planet's future."

Electrical equipment can be taken to any of the six waste and recycling centres across South Lanarkshire where it is segregated and sent on for processing. Kettles, hair dryers, televisions, computers and monitors, cookers, fridges, washing machines, microwaves, fluorescent tubes - in fact, almost any electrical appliance you can think of can be recycled.

The council also provides a free special uplift service for large items of domestic waste, electrical waste and, during the season, garden waste. If you require a special uplift please call 01698 717777 during office hours.
