Road safety calendar competition winners

The winner of this year's annual Road Safety Calendar Competition is Kirsten Brown, of Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School, who won for her thought-provoking design 'Their Lives in your Hands'.

Kirsten's prize is £100, an individual trophy and her painting used as the illustration for the 2009 Road Safety Calendar. And the East Kilbride primary school gets to keep the Calendar Competition trophy throughout 2009.

Around 15,000 children from 108 schools throughout South Lanarkshire took part in this year's competition. Teachers were asked to send in the best five entries in each year category from their school, resulting in almost 3000 entries being submitted to the council's Road Safety Team.

These entries where whittled down by the team and a judging panel of local councillors, council officials and police representatives picked the top three in each category.

Primary 1 and 2 pupils' designs had to be based on the School Crossing Patroller, for P3/4 the theme was The Green Cross Code, for P5/6 it was Twenty's Plenty, for P7 it was Passenger Safety and for secondary pupils it was Sustainable Travel.

Councillor John Murray, the chair of the council's Roads Safety Forum, said: "The standard of entries this year was absolutely first-class. All the judges commented on how difficult it was to pick an overall winner, but Kirsten's design certainly deserves this year's title.

"I would like to thank every pupil who took part - your support and help ensures that the Road Safety Calendar Competition remains such a success.

"I would also like to thank the police for their time in helping us judge the competition and the Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership for their support of the event."
