Councillor David McLachlan recently returned to the classroom to officially open Glenlee Primary School.
Councillor McLachlan said: "It was a real pleasure to unveil the plaque to mark the official opening of the new building with its fantastic facilities.
"There is a very positive atmosphere and the whole set up is geared towards giving pupils a real head start in their school careers. I know the pupils love their new school and I wish them all the very best for their futures."
The school, with its roll of 325 primary and 47 nursery pupils, is one of 28 new primary schools that have opened in South Lanarkshire as part of the council's £850million Primary Schools Modernisation Programme - the largest local authority programme of its kind in Europe.
Head teacher Jim Reid said: "This is a very happy day for everyone connected with the school and we are delighted to have the opportunity to share our new facilities with our guests. All of us, teachers, pupils and support staff, have settled into our new home and the children are very proud of their new school."
Guests were given a tour of the school to see the classrooms and the range of learning and teaching facilities pupils use each day. The new £9million school, which shares the campus with Hamilton School for the Deaf, was built by Carillion.
