350 party at their leisure

More than 350 children and adults have celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Coalburn Leisure Complex.

The celebrations saw all the facilities being used free of charge including skin consultations and beauty therapy demonstrations, rookie lifeguard lessons and inflatable fun swim sessions for 8-12year-olds, face-painting, bouncy castle and a mobile play area and health checks and mini inductions, nutrition updates and personal training sessions at the Club Gym.

And if that wasn't enough there were complimentary refreshments available throughout the day.

The Leisure Complex, which opened in October 1998, was owned by South Lanarkshire Rural Communities Trust which funded the project through money received from Scottish Coal based on the tonnage of coal mined in the local area. And in April 2004 the complex passed into the full ownership of the council's Community Resources.

Councillor Gerry Convery, the chair of the Community Resources Committee and the Board of South Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd, said: "The complex has been a much valued asset since it opened in 1998.

"Local people who use the complex enjoy a wide range of facilities and there is no doubt that this has made a great contribution to the health and well being of many in the community.

"And it has proved so successful that it has some of the highest customer satisfaction ratings of all the leisure centres in South Lanarkshire. This is down to the quality of staff and the service that has been provided so I would like to thank every member of staff who has been involved since the centre opened and I wish them every success for the future."

Since the centre opened there have been many developments including the introduction of the beauty therapy service, improvements to the health and fitness programme and extended opening hours.

And attendance figures have grown considerably and it was 'Highly Commended' in the UK's Sport and Leisure Centre's Quality Assurance Scheme - Quest!
