Football team score success in league

AVENDALE AFC from Strathaven, who represent Avendale Old Parish Church in the Strathclyde Churches League, won the first division title.

They won the honour for the first time following a league campaign in which they only lost one match.

The team were also Fraser Trophy runners-up and Athol Cup quarter-finalists in what has been a very successful season for the team which was set up seven years ago.

Team manager Iain Shaw said: “This has been our most successful season, to date, having improved on our league standing and position every season until now.

“The difficult task is attempting to retain our title next season, but we will enjoy this moment and let next season take care of itself.”

The club thanked sponsors Avendale Old Parish Church, Strathaven and District Round Table and Strathaven Hotel.

At the Player of the Year awards, held in Strathaven Hotel with guest speaker Garry Brotherston, awards were presented to: Player of the Year - David Hutchinson; Players’ Player of the Year - David Graham; Young Player Of The Year - Colin Graham; Management Team Player of the Year - Allan Muirhead; Top Scorer - Alex Blair; Fair Play Award - Colin Russell; Most Improved Player - Fraser Lethame; Services To The Club - David Patrick.
