Young Farmers led the field at show

AVONDALE AND DISTRICT YFC: at this year’s Royal Highland Show, Avondale were in full swing competing in many competitions.

Taking part in the Stage Show and supporting the Young Farmers movement were Jamie Watson, Stephanie Speedie, Robert McKechnie, Jenna Ballantyne and Janet Anderson, making up Avondale Musicians on Thursday.

Fiona McCluskey sung with James Taylor from Biggar on Friday and Heather Meikle was part of the West Girls Singing group with Jennifer Bryson, Crossroads and Lorna Hyslop and Carol-Ann Barrie, both from Biggar on Sunday.

In the Photography Competition, Susan Brown and Jenna Ballantyne took part with Susan being placed third.

Our Junior Handicrafts team of Jennifer Baillie, Gillian Walker, Janet Anderson and Stephanie Speedie finished fourth out of 15 teams with Gillian receiving a special prize for her Floral Table Centre.

In the senior section, the team of Susan Brown, Julie Smith, Varrie Dyet, Fiona McCluskey, Heather Meikle and Helen Loggie finished 10th out of 21 teams competing.

In the Stockjudging competition, six members helped to make up part of the Lanarkshire teams.

Andrew Currie and Iain Walker were in the senior ‘A’ team; Robert McKechnie, Varrie Dyet and Jenna Ballantyne were part of the senior ‘C’ team.

Robert was also part of the junior ‘A’ team and Jamie Watson part of the junior ‘B’ team. Robert was second Highest Individual in the junior competition.

Tractor and ATV Driving was held at West Blackmoss Farm, Chapelton by kind permission of the Grant family.

Results - Ladies - Tractor 1st Evelyn Howatson; 2nd Jenna Ballantyne.

ATV 1st Evelyn Howatson; 2nd Alison Bryson; 3rd Gillian Howatson.

Overall Ladies - 1st Evelyn Howatson; 2nd Alison Bryson; 3rd Equal Gillian Howatson and Jenna Ballantyne.

Gents - Tractor 1st Robert Reid; 2nd Alan Smith; 3rd Graham Kerr.

ATV 1st Alan Smith; 2nd Robert Reid; 3rd Gavin Baillie.

Overall Gents 1st Alan Smith; 2nd Robert Reid; 3rd Gavin Baillie.

The Stockjudging is being held at Townend Farm, Stonehouse by kind permission of the Kerr family on Saturday, July 5, starting at 7.30pm, with a dance to follow. All welcome.
