AT the Rotary Club of Strathaven’s meeting last Tuesday President Nigel Thomson welcomed several guests, including past district governor Jim Copeland.
He told members the previous week’s collection in the East Kilbride Shopping Centre raised £1200 for Rotary Shelter and Aqua-Box replenishment.
The club has two teams of four golfers taking part this weekend in a tournament at Dundonald Golf Club in aid of Rotary Charity, Polio Plus.
Clothing collections from schools will be transported on the first stage of their journey to Sierra Leone.
Guest speaker, retired PC Colin McDougall, talked about last few years of his police service. The “high point” of his career was reached when, on top of a high building, he discovered he was acrophobic (suffering an abnormal fear of high places).
He spoke of the qualities required for the force, such as being prepared for the unexpected and the importance of trust in negotiations, before he rounded off a highly informative and amusing talk with some amusing anecdotes.
The vote of thanks was given by past president Ian Thompson, himself a former police officer.
