STONEHOUSE was awarded a silver medal at last month’s Beautiful Scotland judging.
Entered in the small town category, the silver placing indicates an ‘above average’ entry.
Judging took place in August.
The judges looked at four main criteria: floral displays, sustainable development and biodiversity initiatives, environmental quality and community involvement.
Carol Mills, secretary of the group, said: “We entered the Beautiful Scotland competition in August this year and were delighted with our silver award.
“The judges were particularly impressed with work done in Naismith Court, Stonehouse Bowling Club and the grounds of Canderavon Medical Centre.
“Myself and Nancy Craw, committee member, attended Brunton Hall, Musselburgh, to a civic reception to receive the framed award.”
A spokesman for Beautiful Scotland said: “The roundabout at the entrance to this small mining town is very pleasing and the number of small projects completed is impressive.
“Stonehouse Brighter Village Group, as a first-time entrant in the Beautiful Scotland competition, was praised by the judges for all the hard work they have done.”
Mrs Mills added: “The group thank close family and friends and everyone involved in the development of Stonehouse.
“Thanks also go to Maurice Bennet from South Lanarkshire Council’s land services for all his invaluable help over the course of the project.
“This is a fantastic starting point, especially as first-time entrants, we now urge everyone in the community to get involved and see what can be achieved for next year, and perhaps we could do even better.”
