Young Stonehouse mother killed in road tragedy

Stacey Muldoon died after a road accident in Larkhall

A 23-YEAR-OLD mother-of-two was killed yesterday in a road accident in Larkhall.

She was named as Stacey Muldoon of Stonehouse.

The crash happened at around 1.35am at Strutherhill, close to the entrance of the former DAKS factory.

An S40 Volvo car apparently went out of control and left the road.

Stacey, who was a passenger, received serious injuries and was taken to Wishaw General Hospital where she died later that day.

The 21-year-old male driver and a second male passenger, aged 20, were taken to the same hospital.

Medical staff yesterday described their condition as “stable”.

Flowers have been placed at a damaged lamppost where the tragedy occurred.

Villagers told the Advertiser Stacey was the mother of two girls, aged two and four, and has a twin sister, Kelly.

She had worked in the Cooperative store in Stonehouse but up until her death was employed at the village’s Spar.

Scott Smith, who worked alongside Stacey at the Co-op, said: “She used to stack the shelves or work on the tills.

“I found her to be a really friendly person and she seemed to get on well with everyone.

“When I learned this morning what had happened, I was shocked.”

A customer of Spar in Stonehouse said many people in the village knew Stacey through her work at the store.

“She always had a smiling face and to hear that she is dead is tragic,” she added.

Sergeant Fiona Rankin is continuing enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.

Police closed off a stretch of road between Carlisle Road and Canderside Toll early yesterday to carry out investigations into the accident.

The roads were re-opened later in the morning.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident and anyone who saw anything is asked to contact Sergeant Rankin at Motherwell road policing department on 01698 483124.

Larkhall SNP Councillor Lesley McDonald said: “At this very sad time our thoughts go out to her family. It is a tragedy.”
