A STONEHOUSE school is one of four UK schools to reach the final of the Ashden Awards.
Newfield Primary is the only Scottish school in the final of the event, which aim to promote widespread use of local, sustainable energy to benefit the environment.
Head teacher Nan Burrell said: “We are delighted to have qualified for this event. The school has made significant changes in the way the children consider using energy.
“The children have designed notices around light switches to remind people to turn them off. Light fixtures have been changed to incorporate energy-saving bulbs. Draft proofing was installed, push-down taps and water Hippos in the toilets save a great deal of water.
“All these measures were suggested by the children who completed presentations, posters and newsletters, in order to carry the energy-saving message home with them.” The school was awarded £1000 for reaching the final four of the competition.
