STONEHOUSE Bowling Club enjoyed an excellent opening weekend, with the gents event on Saturday and the ladies on Sunday. Both had first-class weather for their respective ceremonies.

On Saturday president Tom Notman invited guests to speak, including Lanarkshire and Larkhall BA officials Sandy Barclay and Tom Notman snr; Adam Ingram MP and councillor Jim Malloy. Gail Notman then opened the green.

In her opening remarks on Sunday, ladies’ president Mrs M. Clark paid tribute to the late Margaret Campbell, previously ladies’ secretary. She then introduced guests including councillor Jackie Burns whom she described as a special friend of the club. Representatives from the SWBA and LWBA also spoke before a large turnout of members.

On both days a game of bowls was followed by an excellent meal.

The junior section resume their activities on Sunday. Junior convener James Macgregor invites all members to be at the clubhouse at 10am for a game and registration for the new season.

Invitations have already been received for a number of tournaments and it is hoped to give all junior members an opportunity to take part throughout the season. The club also plan to host an invitation tournament for juniors which will give them the chance to compete in an all-day game.

The fees for juniors is £10, payable by the end of May.

SENIOR Citizens at 4/5 The Cross enjoyed an outing to Dundee last Wednesday. After a brief stop at Dobbies Garden Centre, members went on to the see the sights of the city. Thanks go to the committee for their arrangements for this excellent day.

STONEHOUSE Parish Church will hold an Elders’ Conference on Saturday, May 10, from 9.30am till 4.30pm.

Communion will be celebrated at the church on Sunday, May 11.

Articles for the church magazine should be given to Margaret McMeekin by this Sunday.

A few seats are still available for the Guild outing to Loch Lomond on Saturday, June 14.

Anyone willing to help with the Christian Aid door-to-door collection should contact Margaret Macgregor.

REV. Kathryn Smith Anderson will conduct the service at Stonehouse Congregational United Reformed Church next week.

The Work Party are holding a silent auction in Paterson Church on Wednesday, May 14, at 7.30pm. Donations for the event can be handed in at the hall at 2pm on the day.

An Elders’ Meeting will be held on May 21.

The collection for ‘Bags for School’ takes place on May 12. Donors are reminded there should be no bric-a-brac, only clothing, bedding, curtains, soft toys, shoes, belts and bags.

MEMBERS of Paterson United Free Church will have an opportunity on Sunday to meet the young people who are going to South Africa. Soup and sandwiches will also be served.

A meeting of the Committee of Managers will be held on Thursday, May 8, at 7pm.

The church handbook is now available at a cost of £3. Anyone wishing to order a copy should contact the session clerk.

Items for the June newsletter should be given to Ishbel Paterson by this Sunday.

Sunday Schools teachers would be grateful if forms could be returned for those children going on the outing to Loudon Castle.

Anyone wishing to see the minister should contact their Elder in the first instance.

A GROUP of local women arranged a night out on Friday in aid of Lanarkshire Cancer Care Taxis (LCCT).

The event attracted an excellent attendance and some of the men entered into the spirit of the occasion by turning up in fancy dress.

It was organised by three local women — Karen, Angela and Wendy, who have connections with a woman who has benefited from the efforts of LCCT, an organisation of volunteers who drive cancer sufferers to hospital for treatment at no cost to the patient.

A final total has not yet been established but will be published next week when all the promises are redeemed.

LODGE Union No. 244 are holding a Management Committee meeting in the masonic hall tonight (Thursday) at 7.30pm.

At the Lodge meeting in the masonic hall at 7.30pm next Thursday, May 8, an emulation of the EA degree will be conferred by Lodge St John No. 20.
