Birds descend on Baron's Haugh

HUNDREDS of hungry birds have descended on the RSPB reserve of Baron’s Haugh, near Motherwell, to stock up on vital food supplies before flying south for the winter.

The wading birds, which include lapwings, black-tailed godwits, green sandpiper and ruff, have already left their breeding grounds in Iceland and Scandinavia and are en route to warmer climes.

Jim Lynch, a regular visitor to Baron’s Haugh, said: “You’ve got hundreds of birds coming and going every day, and you’re never sure what’s going to turn up.”

Ben Mitchell, RSPB Scotland Community and Information Warden at Baron’s Haugh and North Lanarkshire Council Dalzell Estate, said: “It is a really good time for people to come and see what we’re doing at the reserve, as we have a lot of migrant birds in residence.”
