Former S&UN editor dies

ARTHUR Nicol, a former Lanarkshire newspaper editor and founder member of Motherwell and Wishaw Operatic Society, died early on Sunday in Woodend Hospital, Aberdeen, following a short illness.

Arthur, who was 82, lived in the family home at Park Drive, Newmains, for most of his life, moving to Aberdeen in September last year.

Arthur was editor of the Advertiser’s sister paper, the Wishaw Press, for eight years until 1977.

He later moved to what was then the papers’ print centre, in Campbell Street, Hamilton, to assist with the introduction of a new technology system.

His funeral service takes place today (Thursday) at noon in Coltness Memorial Church, Newmains, and then to Cambusnethan Cemetery, Wishaw, at 12.45pm.
