Dawn chorus walk at Baron's Haugh Motherwell

AN audience is being sought for the bird-world equivalent of Pop Idol this weekend, with a dawn chorus walk at the RSPB reserve of Baron’s Haugh, Motherwell.

Birds get busy singing in April and May, not to impress the likes of Simon Cowell, but to attract a mate and defend their territories.

The incredible symphony at dawn is caused by dozens of males singing all at once, with song thrushes, robins and blackbirds getting an early start, joined later in the day by wrens and migrant warblers, such as the chiff chaff.

The lack of background noise and cool, still air makes dawn a perfect time of day for the show.

The walk at Baron’s Haugh is on Sunday, May 4 and starts at 4.30am from the main car park and ending at around 6.30am. Bird listeners shouls wrap up warmly and to bring a flask for their morning cuppa.

The walk is free, though booking is recommended. Contact warden Ben Mitchell, of RSPB Baron’s Haugh and Dalzell Estate, on 07983593257.
