Bogus worker robs woman

A BOGUS workman stole a woman’s purse and handbag while inside her home in New Stevenston last Thursday.

The man, who said he was from a roofing company, entered the 65-year-old woman’s house in Woodside Street, at about 1pm.

Once inside her kitchen he stole her purse and handbag containing a two-figure sum of cash.

Also inside the cream-leather purse were personal cards and papers.

The thief is described as about 5ft. 7ins., stocky build with short dark-brown hair. He was clean shaven and wearing a grey-fleece top.

Police say he may have fled in a silver 4x4.

A spokesman for Bellshill Police said: “It’s apparent that unscrupulous people are involved in this type of activity across the Central Belt.

“Reputable companies who engage in the roof repairs such as, roof sealing (normally carried out using a protective paint/chemical layer which is red in colour), will not ask for a cash payment by cold calling at someone’s door.

“Despicable people have obviously observed the new roof covering on victims homes and then gone to their home, gaining their confidence by stating that they were from the company and then stealing items from them.

“If any person has information regarding this type of incident, please call your local police office or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“Remember do not get caught out by the cold caller.

“If you are unsure of the person, don’t let them in and instead chain the door.

“Always ask for identification and check identification.

“If you are in doubt contact your nearest police station.”
