Council set to invest £40m in housing stock

MORE than £40m is to be spent on North Lanarkshire Council’s housing this year.

The budget includes a £4.9m allocation for home safety and security; £2.3m earmarked for estate regeneration; an £11.4m boost for energy efficiency measures; £8.3m for major repairs and £14.1m to carry out internal upgrading works.

And these allocations will benefit tenants and residents across the areas through a wide range of projects.

Over 4000 tenants and residents will this year see their kitchen and bathroom replaced.

There will be an £11.4m investment in multi-storey accommodation including the completion works to Oakfield, Anderson and Albion towers, and work on both Whamond and Airbles towers in Motherwell.

Gowkthrapple and Forgewood will continued to be improved with a cash boost of £2.3m being invested.

Over 300 homes/flats will be re-roofed with a further 600 houses/flats also being re-rendered from a £6.4m investment in this area.

New door entry systems will be installed in 288 flats and a £3.8m will be invested in a rewiring programme which will look at emergency lighting and security to communal areas in multi-storeys and IRS upgrading of aerial systems in advance of the switch over to digital.

Alarm systems in sheltered housing complexes will be upgraded with a spend of £731,000.

Councillor Barry McCulloch, convener of the housing and social work services committee said: “It’s very pleasing to see such a wide range of excellent projects that will help us deliver many more benefits for our tenants than ever before.

“The planned programme will allow us to make significant improvements both to our housing stock and our local communities. And we're investing in areas that we know are priorities for our tenants. For example, our tenants told us that new kitchens and bathrooms are important to them and we're delivering on this.”
