Gran scoops Postcode Lotto prize

A MOTHERWELL grandmother was last week left speechless after she won £12,500 and a new car in the People’s Postcode Lottery.

Jean Murphy (62), from Ross Gardens, won a share of £25,000 Postcode Street Prize ... and also a new Mini One.

Jean was one of two lucky players from the winning street, sharing the cash with neighbour Donald Pollock (60).

People’s Postcode Lottery Street Prize presenter Angus Purden and his team turned up at Ross Gardens to surprise the lucky winners.

And, as her neighbours gathered on the street to the sound of the East Kilbride Pipe Band, the stunned grandmother was led out to receive her shi9ning, new car.

On winning the People’s Postcode Lottery’s first-ever Postcode Belter, Jean, who has lived in Ross Gardens for 11 years, said: “I’m flabbergasted. For the first time in my life, I’m speechless.”

A retired lecturer in business and accounting at Motherwell College, Jean thought that she’d only won a clock radio.

Jean and husband Mike (62) already have plans for spending their £12,500 cash prize, with a holiday to Bulgaria coming up later in the year.

The holiday will come as light relief, however, as the family have had a troubled end to 2007, with

Jean’s daughter-in-law Davina awaiting a donor for a kidney transplant.

Jean hopes that the trip to Bulgaria will brighten the mood of grandson Scott (5), who has been unable to go on holiday due to his mum’s condition.

Winning neighbour Donald Pollock was over the moon with his share of the Postcode Street Prize.

He said: “This win is superb, thank you so much. Without a doubt, I’ll keep playing.”

Asked what he was going to do with his winnings, Donald joked: “No doubt my wife will find ways to spend the money.”

The People’s Postcode Lottery is subscription based and players purchase a £2 ticket based on their postcode. Each ticket in the winning postcode receives a share of the £25,000 Street Prize, with a further £5000 being split between ticket holders in the Postcode Sector.

Every ticket is also entered in the monthly Postcode Belter.
