POLICE have warned youngsters they are dicing with death every time they use quad and trial bikes illegally in Larkhall.
They vowed to clamp down on law-breakers who are recklessly riding the vehicles in public places across the town.
The new crackdown is in response to complaints from residents who say illegal use of quad bikes is making their lives a misery.
Inspector Andy Munro, of Larkhall Police Office, said: “Unfortunately, one of the main issues for police is the fact that many members of the public, particularly young people, view these vehicles as toys.
“This is not the case at all and users should remember that while it may seem like a bit of fun, these powerful machines can cause a great deal of damage or injury and are in fact covered by road traffic legislation.
“We are working with our partners to tackle this problem and to show the minority who choose to ride their bikes irresponsibly and illegally that this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.
“Anyone found to be driving carelessly or causing distress and annoyance to members of the public will have their bikes seized and perhaps even destroyed.”
Police said that parents have a responsibility to ensure their children are riding the vehicles in a safe, secure and legal manner.
If they don’t, they are facing prosecution, have points added to theirlicence and a hefty fine.
Anyone who wishes to report an illegal quad bike incident should contact Larkhall Police on 202322, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 where calls are free and anonymity can be maintained.
