Learners’ Week courses on offer

A RANGE of activities are being held in Clydesdale to mark Adult Learners' Week 2008, which starts on Saturday.

The week’s aim is to promote education and training for adults, provide access to information and guidance, motivate more adults to participate in learning and celebrate their learning achievements.

In Clydesdale, events begin on Saturday at Forth Community Resource Centre.

A fascinator workshop is being held from 10am-1pm.

This introduction to hat making is sure to be popular and spaces are limited, so early booking is essential. Call 01555 811002 to reserve a place.

On Monday, events continue with a Digital Music Workshop at Forth Community Resource Centre, running from 2pm until 4pm. Spaces are strictly limited for this event, so please call 01555 811002 to ensure your place.

An adult literacy and numeracy session will be held later that day at the Coalburn One Stop Shop from 7pm until 9pm. Contact Helen Donnelly for further information on 01555 820060.

On the same evening, a celebration will be taking place at the Popinjay Hotel, Rosebank, from 7pm until 9pm. This is open to all parents and carers who have participated in adult learning opportunities through Home School Partnership to go along and celebrate their successes. For further information, contact Tina McFadyen on 07795090915. On Tuesday, May 20, a Celebration of Learning through words and numbers will be held at Lanark Library from 1pm until 3pm.

Lanark Library is the location for a family history event from 10am until noon on the same day.

A tai chi workshop will take place later that day at Lesmahagow Masonic Hall. The event will run from 1.30pm until 3pm and will allow participants the opportunity to experience this exercise, involving co-ordinated body movements, which focuses on the cultivation of internal energy. An event aimed at educating participants in decorative writing skills will be held at Forth Community Resource Centre. The calligraphy workshop will be held from 1pm until 3pm and booking is essential due to limited numbers. Call 01555 811002 to reserve your place.

Wednesday, May 21, is scheduled to be yet another busy day.

An Around the World event will take place at Coalburn's One Stop Shop. Participants will be able to sample a range of complementary therapy workshops and demonstrations. Booking is essential for this event and places can be reserved by calling Elaine Houston or Nan Frame on 01555 880666.

Running from 11am-noon, a fitness training session at Lanark New Winston Gym will give young people from 17-25 the opportunity to learn how to use gym equipment under the instruction of a trainer and then get advice on how to develop their own health and fitness. Coalburn One Stop Shop is the location for computer courses running from 9am until 3pm. A selection of sessions is available ranging from beginners to ECDL courses. Contact Helen Donnelly for further information or to reserve a place call 01555 820060.

Forth Community Resources Centre is hosting a variety of events throughout Wednesday, May 21.

Silver surfers and AbilityNet will run from 2pm until 4pm and will allow the over 50s to explore the internet and will examine ways of making computing easier. Booking is essential for this event due to very limited places being available. Call 01555 811002 to reserve.

An introduction to Indian head massage will take place from 1pm until 3pm. Booking is essential for this event and 01555 811002 is the number to call if you are interested in attending this class.

A jewellery-making-for-beginners class will take place at Carstairs Community Centre from 7pm until 9pm. Booking is absolutely essential and places can be reserved by calling 01555 811002.

A salsa class will be held on Thursday, May 22, at Coalburn's One Stop Shop. Helen Donnelly should be contacted for further information on 01555 820060.

A flower arranging session has been organised at Tarbrax Village Hall from 7pm until 9pm. Booking is strictly essential due to a very limited number of places. Call 01555 811002 to reserve a place.

To round up Adult Learners’ Week, Friday May 23, will see another very busy day.

A Pampering Pitstop will be held at Coalburn One Stop Shop from 10am until noon which will offer tired learners the chance to recharge their batteries. Helen Donnelly can provide further information on 01555 820060.

Carstairs Junction Hall is the location for a card making session from 11am until 1pm. Booking for this event is suggested due to limited spaces. Call 01555 811002 for further details or to reserve a place.

Councillor Mary Smith, chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Education Committee, said: “I am astounded at the wide and varied array of events on offer during Adult Learners’ Week.

“There really is something for everyone ranging from brushing up on computer skills, participating in arts and crafts activities or looking at ways to improve health and fitness.

“I would urge people to pick up the phone and book a place on one or more of these sessions.

“It really is an excellent opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people and have fun in the process.”
