KIRKTON players wanted to show their appreciation to Kirkton Church for allowing the use of the church hall for rehearsals and production of the play, A Wake for Mother.

A capacity audience attended their Bit of a Do, which was arranged to raise funds for the church hall.

Gerry Burns introduced the company to the evening, where everyone received a glass of wine on entry and a musical greeting by Linda Boyle and Ray Ashe. Ray was accompanied by Anne Ramsay, with readings by Margaret Smith.

A lovely supper was served at the interval by Kirkton Coffee Club and willing helpers of the fund-raising committee.

The Players then presented A Respectable Funeral by Jimmie Chinn, an hilarious one-act comedy featuring the story of three daughters coming together after their mother’s funeral.

Mary Tweedie, Ros Armstrong, Sandra Robson and Stuart Allison had their audience in “tears of laughter” and all received a well-deserved reception at the final bows. Praise was also given to producer, Alex Welch.

The evening was also a financial success, with over £600 being made from ticket sales and an announcement by Gerry Burns that the Kirkton Players would donate £400 to make the total up to £1000.

LODGE St John 187 Carluke have a regular meeting in Newlands Masonic Temple tonight (Thursday) at 7.30pm.

RWM Ian Grieve welcomed everyone to the fund-raising prize bingo in the masonic hall last Wednesday. Thanks go to everyone who contributed to the success of the event, the proceeds from which will go to the seniors’ dinner and entertainment on Friday, May 30.

KIRKTON Church have raised £352 by donating black bin bags full of unwanted clothes.

All lets for the church hall 2008/09 must be submitted before May 20.

Kirkton Church will be open on Tuesdays at 11am for anyone wishing a time of quiet reflection and prayer.

ST Andrew’s Church will hold family worship on Sunday at 10am. The morning service starts at 11am.

ST John’s Church would appreciate help with the Christian Aid Cafe, being held in the hall this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

RESIDENTS of Woodhurst Nursing Home enjoyed entertainment from concert party Kindred Spirit last week.

Members also enjoyed an outing to the Kudos Cafe for morning tea and cakes.

ROSEMOUNT Very Sheltered Complex held their prize bingo afternoon last Wednesday. This will be the last afternoon until October, when Margaret and friends will return to the complex with prize bingo and entertainment.

ST Athanasius Parish were delighted to invite the parishioners and friends to go along and view the new parish hall, which is now complete and ready for use by the local community.

As a trial run a social evening will be held in the hall this Friday, May 16, with entry by donation.

The fund-raising committee have now arranged a meeting to plan events for the new hall. Bookings to the public must be made through booking forms.

CRAWFORDDYKE Primary School will hold an open afternoon on Wednesday, May 21, to discuss uniform requirements. Items will be on display to try on and order for new and existing pupils attending Crawforddyke Primary in 2008/09.

Crawforddyke are gearing up for Gala Day on June 16. The two maids chosen for this year’s event have now had their official photographs taken, and the committee involved in organising the event are in the final stages. The next meeting will be held on June 9.

Two teams from P7 will take part in this year’s Carluke Rotary Quiz, being held at Kirkton Primary on Tuesday, May 20.

Three of Crawforddyke’s pupils travelled to the British Tae Kwon Do Championships at Stratford-upon-Avon and came back with medals. Congratulations go to Aimee Bryce (7) who won gold (sparring), bronze (patterns); James McNair (7), gold (patterns); silver (sparring), and Amy Jackson (9), silver (sparring). The pupils attend the local Tae Kwon Do sessions at the industrial estate run by Mr Condie.

The school also won the Cross Country Shield, when over 35 pupils took part at Carluke’s Moor Park on Saturday, May 3.

CRAWFORDDYKE Nursery held their Teddy Days Picnic at Strathclyde Park last week.

The event was well organised by South Lanarkshire Council and hundreds of children helped to raise money for St Andrew’s Hospice.

THE two Carluke bowling clubs met for the first joint competition of the season at the weekend. Castlehill hosted the Bob Brown Trophy which was won by the Carluke club and presented to president Alan Mathers. Carluke will host the Gents Champions Rinks event on Saturday. Play at Castlehill is for the Gents Invitation Pairs competition followed by entertainment to Velvet Touch.

WINNERS at the Carluke Day Centre for the Elderly games afternoon last Thursday were: whist — 1, J. McInture; 2, H. Rodger; booby — P. Smith; dominoes — 1, M. Carruthers; 2, M. Walker; booby — J. Pithie. Members enjoyed their outing the North Berwick.

A FOOTBALL Festival organised by Carluke Boys’ Club 1992 will take place on Saturday at Loch Park Stadium. Kick-off is at 10am. Entrance fees will be £2 and £1 for children. All welcome.

A CHOIR of 400 members, who gather annually to present a three-night concert of traditional hymns and contemporary worship songs, will present their 2008 concert from Friday to Sunday, May 13-15, in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

Over 100 churches will be represented and Kirkton Church have two choir members taking part.
