CARLUKE Rotary Club welcomed John Milloy as guest speaker at their meeting last week.
John gave a talk on the Edrington Group, the owners of some prestige brands of whisky including Famous Grouse, The Macallan and Highland Park.
His talk included the history of his company and the methods of producing Scottish whisky.
John traced the history of the company from the Robertson family, who insisted it remain in private hands, to the present international company.
Rotarians were given the opportunity to nose well-known whiskies to determine the qualities of each. These qualities include peat malted barley, local water and the use of sherry and bourbon barrels in storage.

THE Gala Committee will start their house-to-house collection after the school holiday.

A TREASURE hunt organised by Friends of Kenya will take place on Saturday, April 26, leaving Kirkton Church at 2pm and finishing at the church for a barbecue. The cost is £20 per car, or £5 per adult and £3 per child.

KIRKTON Players are holding a Pre Theatre Tea on Friday, May 2, in the church hall.
This evening with a difference is to help raise funds for the church’s small hall refurbishment and will involve supper, entertainment and a chance to see the Players’ award-winning play, A Respectable Funeral.

Kirkton Players were presented with the Clark Cup last weekend in Stranraer for their presentation of Steel Magnolias.
The Players have now entered the East Kilbride One Act Festival, which takes place during the first week in May. They will perform the Jimmie Chinn play, A Respectable Funeral.
CARLUKE High School took part in the Super School Sports Event held in Waterford, Southern Ireland. The group left on Wednesday with instructor Mr Bennett and took part in several athletic and sporting events. Everyone in the Carluke team was delighted to take second place.

MANY important bowling finals had to be postponed due to bad weather at the end of last season. The forthcoming season is an important time for four young bowlers at Castlehill, who reached the Scottish Young Bowlers finals.
On Saturday, May 17, Martin Leghorn will play for the singles title at Larbert and Lauren Forgie, Ryan Smillie and Mark Connelly will play their triples final at Denny.
CARLUKE Young Farmers held a concert/talent spot dinner in the Tillietudlum Hotel last Friday evening.
Session fees are now payable to Sheena Aitken and cost £14 for new juniors, £18 juniors, £20 new seniors and £25 seniors.

LANARK and Carluke Choral Union will present a concert in St Mary’s Church, Lanark, on Sunday, April 20, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £7 from choir members or at the door on the night.
THE car park at St Athanasius Church will be ready next Sunday and parishioners are asked to use this instead of parking on the road. The area around the church and house is for emergency vehicles only and must be kept free of cars to create a safe environment.
St Athanasius school gala committee need to borrow a trailer to transport their float on gala day. The float is 14ft wide and 22ft long. Anyone who can help should phone Father Naughton on 771250 who will pass it on to the gala committee.
CASTLEHILL Bowling Club open their green for the new season on Saturday at 2pm. The ladies have their opening on Tuesday, April 15, at 2pm.
The popular weekly bingo sessions, sponsored by the town’s Pillar Box, will continue until further notice.
CARLUKE Bowling Club have their opening day on Saturday, April 19, at 2pm. This Saturday, the JJ Duo will provide entertainment.
Everyone at the club congratulates Mr and Mrs Jim Clelland on the occasion of their golden wedding. Many members attended the couple’s celebrations at the weekend. Jim has been a member of the club for many years and is now part of the senior section.

THE United Reform Church ladies have a soup and sweet lunch in the church hall this Saturday from 11.30am till 1.30pm.
CRAWFORDDYKE Primary School had a visit from HMI to check on SLC child protection. The inspectors were focussing on the Sure Start courses organised weekly by Children’s Services and another good report was issued. The inspectors also reported a warm welcoming ethos, friendly staff and pupils at the breakfast club being well catered for and looked after.
Tickets priced £1 are still available for the fund-raising prize bingo session on Tuesday, April 29, in Carluke Masonic Hall. Doors open at 6.30pm, with eyes down 7pm. Raffle prizes will be gratefully accepted from parents and friends.
Parking around the school area is causing problems, with many cars parked on the zig-zag lines. Parents and carers are asked to park sensibly at a safe distance from the school gates.
