Military Remembrance at the David Livingstone Centre

LANARKSHIRE people have a proud heritage of military service stretching from the ancient conflicts which involved our forebears to today’s war zones.

The team at the National Trust for Scotland’s David Livingstone Centre in Blantyre are inviting local families to come along on Saturday, November 19, to find out more about the military history that has shaped the county.

Frances McChlery, property manager for the David Livingstone Centre, said: “During November, the month of Remembrance, we are teaming up with the Lanarkshire Yeomanry Group to hold a Family History Day.

“This will focus particularly on how to find out about family members who served in the forces. What do Grandpa’s medals mean? What was it like for Uncle Jimmy as a prisoner of war?

“There will be illustrated talks throughout the day on family history and Lanarkshire’s regiments, and what the many treasured war memorials in Lanarkshire can tell us.

“We will have a small exhibition of memorabilia along with plenty of very knowledgeable people around to answer any questions to help with your searches and enquiries.”

This event follows a very successful Family History Day which took place earlier in the year.

In August, the David Livingstone Centre held an open day and exhibition with the Lanarkshire Family History Society - www.lanarkshirefhs.org.uk.

There is no set price for the talks but visitors will be asked to make a small donation towards them. All donations will go directly to Erskine Home for armed forces veterans.

The event runs from 10am-4pm. For any further information please contact the centre on 0844 4932207.
