Resurfacing work for Union Street in Hamilton

MOTORISTS travelling in and around Hamilton during the October school break can expect delays as two sets of essential resurfacing works take place.

One set of works will take place in Union Street, which will mean the road being closed in both directions between Auchincampbell Road and Almada Street from 6am on Saturday, October 15, to 11pm on Sunday, October 23.

Residents will be permitted access to and from their homes situated within the area, although there may be some delay depending on the type of work being carried out and its location. Through traffic will not be permitted.

Union Street will also be closed to through traffic, between the Bus Station entrance and Auchincampbell Road, from Saturday, October 15 at 6am until Tuesday, October 18 at 11pm.

Access to properties in this stretch of Union Street will be via a one-way system running from Auchincampbell Road to Leechlee Road. No access will be available in the opposite direction.

The diversion route for traffic at the Peacock Cross side of the closure will be along Wellhall Road, Chantinghall Road, Bent Road then Auchincampbell Road.

And the diversion route for traffic at the Town Centre side of the closure will be along Leechlee Road, Cadzow Street, Muir Street and Almada Street.

The second set of works will take place in Burnbank, at the Purdie Street roundabout area. It will last from Monday, October 17, until the following Friday.

Traffic signals will again be in operation to control the flow of vehicles but a diversion will also be put in place for part of the route.

Chairman of South Lanarkshire Council's Enterprise Resources Committee, councillor Chris Thompson, said: “We apologise in advance for any inconvenience these vital resurfacing works may cause. We are carrying them out during the school October week holiday, a period when traffic is usually much quieter than normal.

“I would ask that anyone who is using the area takes note of the restrictions in place, follows the appropriate diversion and leaves extra time for their journey.”
