PROVOST Tom Curley of North Lanarkshire Council was on hand to receive a regimental memento commemorating a historic Lanarkshire regiment.
He accepted the picture displaying battle honours of the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) on behalf of North Lanarkshire Council. It was handed over by veterans of the regiment, including chairman Alan Halliday, and will now be displayed at the local authority’s headquarters.
Formed in Lanarkshire in 1689 through the amalgamation of the 26th Cameronian Regiment and 90th Perthshire Light Infantry, soldiers served the county for almost three centuries, taking part in every major campaign from the jungle swamps in the Far East to Dunkirk and El Alamein, until the 1st Battalion, The Cameronians disbanded in 1968 and their recruiting area was taken over by the King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Provost Curley said: “I had the pleasure of meeting several of the regiment veterans at our recent Armed Forces day. It was an honour to accept this unique memento on behalf of the people of North Lanarkshire, and I was delighted to acknowledge their contribution.”
