A TIRELESS Stonehouse community activist and historian joined Christina McKelvie MSP as her local hero – at the official opening of the fourth session of the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood, Edinburgh, on July 1.
Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse MSP Christina McKelvie nominated John Young for the honour in recognition of the enormous contribution he has made to community life in Stonehouse.
He took part in a Riding along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile alongside over 1000 other Scots – schoolchildren, parliamentarians, religious leaders and other guests from public life – following an address by the Queen to newly-elected members of the Scottish Parliament in the main chamber.
John is an author, musician and historian, and has been a volunteer in his home village for 20 years, initiating projects, promoting the village and fund-raising to support community activities.
A former councillor for the Stonehouse ward, John continues to work to improve the community and preserve the natural environment and heritage.
He has published several volumes on the history of Stonehouse and acts as a tour guide for historical guided walks.
John has been actively involved in a range of local organisations including Stonehouse Heritage Group, Stonehouse Brighter Village, Stonehouse Folk Club, and as director of Stonehouse Development Trust.
He was a founder of the Stonehouse Family Support Group, which helps local families affected by drug abuse and is a driving force in the Action Group Against Dovesdale Incinerator.
Christina said: “The opening of session four of the Scottish Parliament is a chance for us to celebrate the efforts of genuine local heroes from across Scotland. John is a fantastic example of someone who has given tirelessly of his time and energy to help his community and the people who live there.
“John is known and respected in the village as a champion for Stonehouse. He's an inspiration to me and I was delighted to welcome him to this special day in the parliamentary calendar in recognition of his own achievements and to represent the many folk across Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse who, like John, work every day to make things better for their communities.”
John added: “I feel quite humbled by the award as there are many worthy volunteers in the community who give their time and talents for the betterment of the village.
“Groups such as the Family Support Group and the campaign against the construction of a toxic waste incinerator at Dovesdale are evidence of what we can do as a community.”
