A BRIDGE in the Strathaven area is being strengthened to allow it to cope with the demands of modern heavier vehicles.
Work will begin at Ryelands Burn Bridge on Monday, July 18, and is expected to last six weeks.
The bridge carries the unclassified road between the A71 and the village of Gilmourton over the Ryelands Burn.
The existing bridge deck will be replaced to bring the load-carrying capacity of the bridge up to current highway loading standards.
The road will be closed to vehicles, with a signed diversion route in place, for the duration of the works.
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
The contractor for the project is Castle Group Scotland Ltd.
Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor Chris Thompson, said: “We apologise in advance for any inconvenience the works may cause.
“Every effort has been made to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum throughout the duration of the project.
“We thank local people for their patience during these vital works to improve the bridge.”
