THOUSANDS of commuters face three weeks of misery on the motorway when work begins on a upgrade of the M74.
Drivers are likely to encounter delays when a resurfacing programme begins on the north and southbound M74 carriageway between J2 (Carmyle) and J3 (Daldowie) on Sunday.
More than mile of carriageway will be resurfaced during the 21-day project.
A contraflow system will be set up to enable road workers to carry out the works safely.
For much of the duration of the work, two lanes will remain open in each direction.
However, to enable work progress efficiency, the number of lanes open may be reduced to one in each direction overnight.
During the work, the north bound off-slip at J2, Carmyle, will be closed for one weekend. A short diversion will be in place to direct motorists around this closure.
A reduced speed limit of 50mph will be in operation throughout the length of the contraflow with a further reduction to 30mph at crossovers to ensure the safety of road users and road workers.
Motorists travelling in the area are advised to plan their journey in advance and leave in plenty of time.
An Amey spokesman said: “It is essential motorists have an awareness of where there are road works. Drivers should be aware that reduced speed limits have been put in place to help ensure the safety of workers, themselves and other road-users.
“Extra caution should be exercised near works access points as there may be vehicles entering or exiting the site. Motorists should maintain a two-second gap between themselves and the vehicle in front – no matter what speed they are doing.
“Motorists travelling through this area during this weekend should allow extra time for journeys, pay attention to traffic signs and show due care while passing through the works.”
