STORES giant Sainsbury’s this week announced plans to open a new store in Motherwell which could create 300 jobs.
The proposed development is located on the former bus depot site in Hamilton Road.
The new food store will boast approximately 60,000 sq. ft. of sales space and in the region of 500 parking spaces.
The development is being seen as a major investment in the town and would create up to 300 full- and part-time job opportunities, representing a significant employment boost for Motherwell and the wider North Lanarkshire economy.
Paul Miller, national development surveyor for Sainsbury’s, said: “We are very pleased to be able to announce our intention to bring Sainsbury’s to Motherwell.
“The proposed store represents a significant value of investment into the area and we are confident that the opening of a new store will deliver important benefits to the local economy by offering up to 300 jobs for local people, as well as an improvement in the retail provision currently available to the Motherwell community and its surrounding area.
“We believe that all successful developments come about as a result of working in partnership with local residents, businesses, community groups, and the local authorities.
“As such, we will be consulting with the local residents, businesses and community groups in Motherwell, and we will shortly publicise details of an upcoming public event where the plans for Motherwell will be exhibited.”
Frank Roy, MP for Motherwell and Wishaw, said: “I am delighted at the announcement that Sainsbury’s is looking to bring a store to Motherwell.
“I would welcome the addition of one of the UK’s most identifiable retail brands and I look forward to hearing more about their proposed investment in Motherwell.”
The company is already well-represented in South Lanarkshire, with a store in Hamilton and their dedicated Scotland Buying Unit based in East Kilbride.
