WORK is nearing completion on the new £5m Peacock Cross link road scheme.
Major changes to the traffic flow will take place over the next two weekends and are being phased to help road users get used to the differences.
The first change will see two-way traffic able to travel along Burnbank Road from Clydesdale Street to Peacock Cross from the early hours of Sunday, March 20.
The scheme will be completed the following weekend when Almada Street opens to two-way traffic from Peacock Cross to Douglas Street from the early hours of Sunday, March 27.
The main change to the area has been the construction of the new link road – which is called Peacock Way – and has been open to traffic for the past three weeks.
The new road is designed to take traffic away from Peacock Cross, specifically vehicles using Burnbank Road to get to Wellhall Road and vice-versa.
The new project will mean: Traffic travelling south-east along Burnbank Road will be able to continue past Clydesdale Street to Peacock Cross, instead of having to go via Clydesdale Street, Douglas Street and Almada Street. They will not be allowed to turn right at Peacock Cross to head west on Wellhall Road –- they should instead use the new link road.
Traffic travelling east on Wellhall Road will now be able to continue through Peacock Cross onto Almada Street eastbound, instead of having to go via Burnbank Road, Clydesdale Street and Douglas Street.
Traffic travelling east on Wellhall Road will no longer be able to turn left onto Burnbank Road heading north-west – again, they should use the new link road. Traffic travelling northbound on Union Street will now be able to turn right onto Almada Street (eastbound) and will still be able to turn left onto Wellhall Road, or continue north on Burnbank Road.
Traffic travelling west on Almada Street will still be able to turn left into Union Street, continue west on Wellhall Road and turn right onto Burnbank Road.
Clydesdale Street and Douglas Street will remain one-way.
As well as the changes to the road layout and directions traffic can travel in, a new 100 space park and ride facility has been provided for Hamilton West station.
Executive director of enterprise resources at South Lanarkshire Council, Colin McDowall, said: “We are very grateful to everyone who has been using the area in the past few weeks for the patience shown during the construction works.”
