Motorists face delays as £5m Peacock Cross road scheme continues
MAJOR works to improve the traffic flow in and around the Peacock Cross area of Hamilton will begin during the first weekend of February.
A new link road has been created from Wellhall Road to Burnbank Road as a major part of the £5million scheme.
On Saturday, February 5, resurfacing work will begin at the junction of Clydesdale Street and Burnbank Road.
Detailed diversions will be in place with two-way traffic lights manually operated. Depending on the weather, these works should be completed by Tuesday, February 8.
On Saturday, February 19, a section of Wellhall Road will be closed, from the junction of Peacock Drive to Peacock Cross, to allow for resurfacing work.
Again, detailed diversions will be in place with two-way traffic lights manually operated. One of the diversions will include the use of the new link road.
Although weather dependent, it is anticipated this phase of works will be complete by Tuesday, February 22.
The following Saturday, February 26, the next phase of works will begin at Peacock Cross. As on the previous weekends, detailed diversions and two-way traffic lights manually operated will be in place.
It is hoped that this phase of works will be completed by the Tuesday, March 1, depending on the weather.
More work will need to be carried out the following weekend (March 5) at Peacock Cross but it is expected that this will have little effect on the flow of traffic, except for traffic travelling along Wellhall Road towards the town centre which will be required to use the new link road.
South Lanarkshire Council's enterprise resources committee chairman Chris Thompson, said: "We apologise in advance for any inconvenience these works may cause to road users.
"They are essential in allowing us to progress this vital project which will bring with it many benefits to the people of Hamilton.
"We are carrying out the majority of the work over weekends in a bid to minimise disruption.
“We would advise any road users who are travelling in the areas over the weekends listed to expect delays."
Details of diversion routes and where the work will be taking place will be released by South Lanarkshire Council before each phase. This information will also be on the council website.
