Primary schools in Asghill and Netherburn given the go-ahead

PLANS to build two new primary schools have been given the go-ahead.

South Lanarkshire Council’s planning committee on Tuesday approved the erection of a new £2.4m Netherburn Primary in Netherburn and a new £4.3m Dalserf Primary School in Ashgill.

Councillors agreed to the new Netherburn Primary school in Overton Road despite 16 letters of objection being received.

The new school, which will be built on vacant land, will replace the current school in Draffan Road.

It will consist of four classrooms, gym, multi-purpose area, kitchen, dining room, toilets, office/storage facilities and a nursery.

The school and the nursery will have separate playgrounds.

Access will be via Overton Road and car parking will be provided within the school grounds.

The new Dalserf Primary School, which will be built on the existing football pitches behind Ashgill Community Hall, includes a multi-use games area pitch, car parking and landscaping.

Access to the new school will be via Stewartgill Place but will be upgraded to accommodate the new development.

The existing grass sport/football pitch will be relocated behind the new school.

The new school will provide accommodation in four classrooms, combined gym/dining facilities, kitchen, library, plant and office/storage facilities.

Work on both schools will begin next month.

Pupils are expected to move into their new schools next summer.

Councillor Graham Scott, chairman of the planning committee welcomed proposals for the new schools.

He said: “It brings a sense of pride for the members of this committee to be able to play a part in the Schools’ Modernisation Programme.

“This time, we have before us proposals which will transform the learning experiences of hundreds of children, both now and in the years to come.

“I have no doubt each of the school communities will embrace the genuine benefits to be gained from new modern and vibrant environments in which to teach and learn.”
