Serious disturbance in Jervision area

A TEENAGER was arrested and nine people are to be reported to the procurator fiscal following a serious disturbance in a North Lanarkshire town.

It happened in Northhall Quadrant and Clapperhowe Road areas of Jerviston, Motherwell, at about 6.30pm Saturday.

The windows of several homes were broken by stone-throwing and three of the occupants suffered slight injuries.

A 16-year-old male was arrested at the time of the incident and detained in custody prior to an appearance at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Monday.

A further seven males and two females are to be reported in connection with allegations of mobbing and rioting, culpable and reckless conduct, vandalism and being in possession of offensive weapons.

Police believe the incident arose from an ongoing dispute between different factions in the Jerviston area.

Inspector Bill Crawford of Motherwell Police office said: " We will continue to robustly police individuals who are responsible for incidents such as those which occurred on Saturday.

“We will be requesting that the full weight of the judicial system be brought to bear on those responsible for this incident.

“As a police service we are aware that crimes such as these have an effect not only on the victims but also on the community as a whole.”
