THE ARMED Forces have lost their oldest former prisoner of war, with the death of Hamilton man Benny Gough.
Benny, who was 96 years old, died last Friday after being taken into Hairmyres Hospital as it was believed he had suffered a stroke.
Benny was a well-known figure in Hamilton, and, as a former soldier, he worked hard with various projects for retired and ex-servicemen and women.
He was awarded the Burma Star for operational service during the Burma Campaign, which lasted from December 1941 to September 1945.
A spokesman for a local charity which helps ex-servicemen and women said: “Benny was one of the nicest men I have ever met in my life.
“He worked tirelessly and attended many events to promote services available to ex-service personnel.
“He was precious to everyone who knew him and will be missed.
“With the greatest respect, we send our deep condolences to his family.”
A spokesman for the General Officer Commander said: “We were very saddened to hear of the death of Benny Gough.
“He served his country with great pride and his contribution to the Armed Forces has meant that we can have the way of life we have in the UK.
“We send our deepest condolences to his daughter and the rest of Benny’s family.”
Benny’s funeral will be held in the Old parish Church, Hamilton on Friday, February 19, at 2pm.
