Chapelton farmhouse destroyed in blaze

A LANARKSHIRE farmhouse was destroyed in a blaze on Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters were alerted to the emergency at Claddance Farm, near Chapelton, by a call to the Fire and Rescue’s Operations Control Centre at 3.05pm.

Fire appliances and crews from East Kilbride Community Fire Station quickly made their way to the scene.

However, by then the flames had taken a strong hold and were spreading fast through the two-storey farmhouse and into its roof space.

A fire brigade spokesman said: “It was quickly determined that more fire engines were needed and at the height of the blaze further appliances and additional resources attended.”

As the fire threatened to spread to an adjoining property three main jets and a hosereel jet were used to halt its progress.

A police spokesman said: “We received the report of a fire at 3.15pm on Tuesday, January 12.

“Police and Fire Rescue services attended the fire, but no one was injured.

“The fire is not thought to be suspicious.” A spokesman from the Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service added: “There was significant damage to the building which will now need to be demolished.”

Specialist fire officers are working closely with police to determine the cause of the blaze.
