MUCH of Hamilton central library was closed on Tuesday morning due to a burst water pipe in the Town House.
Library services were expected to be disrupted for a few days as a clean-up operation takes place.
Staff returned to work at the Cadzow Street building on Tuesday morning to find that water had leaked into the children’s library area, the arts studio and the arts wing.
The community learning offices and basement storage areas were also affected.
However, the main lending area was left untouched.
The cost of the water damage was this week being assessed.
By Tuesday afternoon, only the children’s library remained closed to the public.
A council spokesman said: “A burst pipe caused by unusually low temperatures leaked into the children’s library area and the water seeped through into the arts studios and arts wing, the library and community learning offices and library basement storage.
“The only public area currently out of action is the children’s library. All other areas of the library are accessible and will be open as usual tomorrow (Tuesday).
“There will, however, be some disruption to services over the next few days as the clean-up takes place.
“We will try to keep the public informed by notice as far as possible”.
