KIND-HEARTED workers from South Lanarkshire Council have raised over £1500 for charity.
Blacksmiths, brickies, plumbers and roofers took part in a football match last month to raise cash for Cancer Research.
The match involved workers from the authority’s Hamilton yard playing against a team from the council’s East Kilbride depot.
The match took place at Ballerup Sports and Recreation Centre.
The East Kilbride yard workers won with a victory of 4-3 – but, more importantly, they raised just over £1500.
Blacksmith Alan Brady, who lives in Blantyre and is based at the council’s East Kilbride depot, organised the event. He explained: “There are, unfortunately, several work colleagues at present affected by cancer.
“All the workers decided we would do what we could to raise as much cash as possible for this worthwhile charity.
“When we all sat down to talk about things, it was quite shocking how many of us had been affected in some way by different types of cancer.”
He added: “The event was a huge success and we ended up with various prizes being donated.
“These included signed footballs, 100 pies and sausage rolls and home baking.
“We sold football cards, had sponsor sheets and generally annoyed people for cash. On the day we had buckets around the pitch and sold more raffle tickets.
“All the lads involved behaved themselves and there wasn’t even a booking in the match. Many thanks to all who supported and attended and the guys who put in hard work to make it all happen.”
