Warning of new tax rebate cash scam

RESIDENTS were this week warned to be on their guard against fraudsters who are telephoning people to offer them council tax rebates. The callers claim to work for South Lanarkshire Council and request bank details to allow them to pay the "refund" directly into bank accounts.

The council have been altered by members of the public who were suspicious of the calls.

A South Lanarkshire Council spokeswoman said: “Under no circumstances should people divulge their bank details.

“The council would not request bank details as all council tax refunds are paid by cheque.”
