Runners from Strathaven Explorer Scouts run 10k for charity

A TEAM of fit-as-a-fiddle runners from Strathaven Explorer Scouts successfully ran in a 10k race to raise money for a children’s health charity.

The five strong team from the 1st Strathaven Explorer Scout Unit took part in the Strathaven Striders' 10k race ‘Run With the Wind’ at the beginning of the month and all successfully completed the course in good times.

The boys enjoyed the challenge despite the very wet conditions which prevailed throughout the event helping to raise funds for their chosen charity.

Robert Kerr was the first of the four Explorers home, who made an excellent time of 43m 45seconds with the others in equally respectable times not far behind.

Leader Iain Park was delighted to complete the race in under an hour.

This week, all the money raised from the efforts of the lads was counted and between them have raised over £700 in sponsorship for the Charity Health Help International in support of their Care Home for handicapped children in Southern India.

This £700 will be added to their on-going amount which totals £4700 for 2008 and 2009 to date.

The money will be given to Tirunelveli Children’s Home for additional medical supplies and other facilities for the home that provides residential care for 15 severely physically and mentally handicapped children.

Health Help International are hoping to expand the facility to hold 30 beds, so great is the need.

Iain Park, Scout Leader said: “The Explorers are grateful to all the members of the Friends of Strathaven Scouts who supported their efforts so generously and helped them to raise this excellent sum.”

If anyone in the area would like to donate to this worthwhile cause, please contact Iain Park 01357 520 204 or any of the Scout leaders.
