Hit-and-run driver leaves damaged cars behind in Stonehose

A HIT-AND-RUN driver damaged three cars and uprooted a lamppost in Stonehouse last weekend before abandoning the car and making off.

Eyewitnesses said that they saw a silver grey saloon-type car being driven in the village’s Murray Drive, Camnethan Street and King Street.

In a telephone call to police at 7.15am on Sunday, the caller reported that his car had been struck while it was parked outside his home in Murray Drive.

At 8.45am, another call reported damage to a wing and side mirror of a car and damage to a neighbour’s 4x4.

The car which used on the joyride, a grey saloon, was abandoned when it was severely damaged after trashing the lamppost. It was taken away on a low-loader on Sunday morning.

A Larkhall Police spokesman said: “At least three cars were damaged and we believe that another two were slightly damaged.”

“Nobody was injured in the accident, and the driver abandoned the car in Camnethan Street after striking a parked vehicle.

The car, which we can’t yet confirm was actually stolen, was a silver Mercedes saloon.”

Police are trying to trace the owner of the vehicle.

A spokesman for South Lanarkshire Council said: “We are aware of damage to a lighting column in Murray Drive.

“The column has been made safe and repairs will be carried out.”

If anyone saw the incident or can identify the driver or any other passengers in the car or if has any other of information on the incident, contact Inspector Munro at Larkhall Police Station on 01698 202300 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
