Hamilton youngsters rally round in memory of Leigha (4)

KIND-hearted youngsters and staff from a town nursery have raised cash in memory of a Hamilton tot who died from a meningitis-linked infection.

St Elizabeth’s Nursery held a coffee morning raising £300 for the Leigha Corns Tribute Fund.

Leigha attended the nursery before she died from meningococcal septicaemia in October 2006, aged just four.

The nursery and the school have been continuing to raise money for the fund, which supports charities linked to meningitis, since the youngster tragically passed away.

The nursery team would like to thank all the parents who attended the coffee morning

Following the tragedy, Leigha’s family were keen to expand public awareness of the condition and set up a tribute fund in her memory.

Thousands of pounds have already been raised for the fund which raises cash for charities linked to meningitis.

Leigha’s gran Sally Corns said: “When Leigha died, it all happened so quickly. She was up sick through the night and went to the doctor the next morning. She had two large purple spots on her neck.

“The doctor admitted her to Wishaw General with suspected meningitis and she was later transferred to Yorkhill Hospital but died just days later.

“The nursery and the school have been great. When Leigha passed away they erected a bench in her memory in the playground and they were also excellent when it came to supporting our very successful charity night.”

Sally hopes to hold another charity evening in March next year.
