Blantyre's The Haven Centre signs up for South Lanarkshire Compact

THE Haven centre in Blantyre has added its name to the South Lanarkshire Compact – a formal agreement designed to ensure that the public and voluntary sectors work together to ensure the greatest benefits for the communities they serve.

Drawn up over the course of two years and with the support of widespread consultation, the South Lanarkshire Compact was officially launched in Rutherglen last Wednesday, October 21.

Around 100 representatives from dozens of different voluntary and community organisations were on hand to show their support.

Speaking at the launch event South Lanarkshire Compact Development Officer Stephen McGinty said: “Our vision is for a thriving, connected and sustainable voluntary sector, working in partnership with the public agencies in South Lanarkshire, to deliver improved resources, activities and services, which enhance and increase the quality of life for local people and their communities.”

Leader of South Lanarkshire Council, councillor Eddie McAvoy said: “The council recognises the vital role the community and voluntary sector plays in making this area a great place to live and work.

“The signing of the Compact is far more than a symbolic gesture as this is not a glossy document that will go and gather dust on a shelf but an ongoing process where we must work together to identify and tackle issues.”
