ADVERTS look set to appear at roundabouts across South Lanarkshire.
But the council say the signs - erected under a ‘sponsorship scheme’ - would be modest and will also be designed to minimise driver distraction.
The sponsor’s text and logo would be mounted within a frame bearing the South Lanarkshire Council logo under a 12-month pilot project.
Money raised initially will fund features like enhanced landscaping, improved road markings and signage.
Chair of South Lanarkshire Council's Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor Chris Thompson, explained the reasions behind the move.
He said: "This could be an excellent way of bringing in extra revenue for the council.
"One of the biggest considerations has to be road safety, but we will ensure the signs do not cause distraction to drivers or detract from the traffic signs already in place.
"We anticipate that the money generated will go towards improving roads infrastructure and road safety.
"Of course, given the current economic climate, the scheme may take some time to establish and grow.
"Hopefully local companies and organisations will recognise the opportunity to generate additional business through sponsorship in prominent locations."
The roundabouts which are being considered for the pilot scheme include: Motherwell Rd/Palace Grounds Road, Hamilton; Hillhouse Rd/International Avenue, Hamilton; Strathaven Road/A71, Larkhall; Clyde Street/Luggie Road, Carluke.
