THE mother of a Hamilton boy who tragically died following a road accident earlier this year said this week she has been “overwhelmed” by the fundraising work carried out in his memory.
Over the last few months Lily Turley has been involved in a number of events to help raise cash for the NHS Organ Donation Service.
Her 13-year-old son Daryl was hit by a motor bike on Bothwell Road on January 31 and received severe head injuries.
When it became clear Daryl was brain dead his family decided to donate his organs.
Five people were given the gift of life following the decision by the family
Events held to raise cash for Organ Donation Service have so far raised at least £10,000.
Mrs Turley hopes the fundraisers will help raise awareness of the need for organ donation.
She said: “People from all over and all ages have been getting involved. I’m absolutely delighted.
“These fundraising events have brought the community together. They have worked tirelessly to make it all happen.
“I really appreciate the help that I’ve received from the community and outwith the community too.
“I couldn’t have done it without their support. They gave me the strength to go on.”
Fundraising initiatives included a football tournament at the PowerLeague on Bothwell Road (£430), a kids danceathon event by the Relfex Dance Group (£300), a sponsored walk round Strathclyde Park (£200), a sponsored run by employees of Mainland Van Hire (£1000), and donations from staff and customers at Hamilton Road Chef (£300).
Nursery children also raised money by taking part in a sponsored walk in their pyjamas around Whitehill and a special night to remember Daryl at Blantyre Miners’ Welfare.
It is hoped the football tournament which was such a success will be held again next year.
Around 22 teams had taken part in the event at the PowerLeague on Bothwell Road.
Mrs Turley said: “I would love to see the football tournament continue. Daryl was a big football fan, and I’d like to see it become an annual event.”
