Eyesore Burnbank garages face demolition

A RUNDOWN block of garages in Burnbank are set to be demolished.

SNP councillor Barry Douglas has welcomed South Lanarkshire Council's move to bulldoze the garages at George Court.

Councillor Douglas has been campaigning for two years to have the garages taken away in an effort to improve the area.

"I am delighted that a commitment has now been given by the council to have this eyesore removed,” he said.

“While some of the garages are used by tenants, Housing and Technical Resources staff are in the process of moving the remaining tenants to other lock-ups in Burnbank.

“Once this is complete I understand the garage block will be demolished within a few weeks."

Councillor Douglas said that since he was elected in May 2007, tenants and residents in Burnbank have complained to him about the condition of this block of garages.

He added: “Since that time, the situation has got worse as a number of garages have been burnt-out and many no longer have doors or roofs on them.

“This derelict eyesore gives visitors the wrong impression of Hamilton, as the garages can clearly be seen from Burnbank Road, a main route into town from East Kilbride and beyond."
