RESIDENTS and businesses were warned to be on their guard this week – after a spate of break-ins in the Hamilton area.
Police issued the warning after two incidents, in Hamilton and in Larkhall.
Between May 23 and May 25, thieves targeted a property at Jura Gardens, Larkhall.
They made off with goods and damaged the patio door during the raid.
Would-be thieves attempted to break into commercial premises in Pomona Place, Hamilton, between May 23 and May 25.
They left empty-handed after failing to gain access but damaged the property’s door during the incident.
Sergeant Claire Campbell, of Hamilton Police’s Community Safety Department, said: “Following a recent spate of housebreak-ins, we are keen to reinforce the message of home security.
“It should be high on the priority list and householders should remember to lock doors and windows when leaving the house or when retiring for the evening.
“When you are going to be out during the hours of darkness, keep a light on, or you could consider purchasing a timer switch for your light. They can be bought from supermarkets or DIY stores and act as a great deterrent for thieves.”
Here are some simple ways which can help you protect your household from thieves:
l Ensure your house is properly secured and keep doors locked even when the house is occupied – paying particular attention to windows, patio doors and conservatories, removing keys from doors and windows.
l Where possible, avoid leaving valuable items or desirable items, (e.g. handbags, credit cards) which can be easily seen.
l Avoid leaving house/car keys in the hallway, on the stairs or other areas where someone breaking in could easily spot them or could easily obtain them.
