POLICE are carrying out an investigation into an alleged assault following a fight between Uddingston Grammar pupils.
Officers were called out to the new school building on Old Glasgow Road on two occasions on Friday, March 27, following reports of disturbances.
The earlier report concerned two pupils who had been engaged in a fight. One of them is understood to have sustained a nose injury.
Officers later arrested a 14-year-old female pupil for a breach of the peace.
Superintendent Colin Campbell of Hamilton Police Office said this week: “I can confirm that we did receive a couple of calls on Friday, March 27, from the school.
“One at 11.30am, and another at 1.20pm, in relation to a disturbance.
“Police did attend, and inquiries over an allegation of assault are continuing.
“One 14-year-old female was arrested for a breach of the peace.”
Superintendent Campbell added when pupils return following the Easter break officers and school staff would take measures to prevent a reoccurrence of the incident.
A South Lanarkshire Council spokesman explained: “There was an incident at the school last Friday between two male pupils with rumours spreading that it would continue at lunchtime.
“As a result, school staff contacted the police as some pupils were getting excitable.
“One pupil was detained by the police as a result of her use of language towards them.
“Pupils then calmed down and at the end of the school day left in an orderly fashion.”
Uddingston councillor Jim McGuigan said constituents had expressed concern to him about a matter in which both police and the ambulance service were involved.
“People in the area and parents are concerned this has happened,” he commented.
“It would appear that some influences here are external to Uddingston Grammar.”
