POLICE in Hamilton have conducted test purchase operations in response to community concerns regarding underage drinking and the irresponsible sale of age-restricted products such as fireworks and knives.
Between November 1 and November 15, premises were tested and officers recorded no failures.
Licensees who fail test purchase visits face prosecution and could have their licences suspended or revoked.
Superintendent Ian Callander, sub-divisional officer for Hamilton, said: “The premises tested have been identified from intelligence provided by the community as being involved in underage alcohol sales.
“On this occasion the premises involved passed their respective tests. However, I would urge licensees and staff to remain vigilant when authorising sales and not to become complacent.
“I am satisfied that some of these premises were found to have good internal procedures in place such as company challenge 21/25 policy, proof of age and made use of a refusal book provided by South Lanarkshire Council.”
He has instructed community policing teams to gather intelligence within their local area to support the ongoing test purchase operations. Mr Callander also encouraged licensees to report to police youths who congregate outside their premises and pester adults to buy alcohol on their behalf.
