CALDERSIDE ACADEMY are appealing for parent tutors to assist the school in a national reading initiative.
The Scottish Government launched a paired reading initiative in 2004 called Scotland Reads in a bid to improve national standards in literacy.
Calderside Academy, with the assistance of library staff and South Lanarkshire Council’s Scotland Reads co-ordinator, Lindsay Ross, began training a total of 10 parent tutors and 20 S6 senior learning buddies.
Librarian Carolyn Fisher was instrumental in facilitating the two-and-a-half-hour sessions a week to work with the S1 pupils and their tutors.
Since the school re-opened last month, Mr Ross has trained a further five probationer teachers in the Scotland Reads strategies.
The school is in a strong position to start work with the new S1 intake.
Further support will be given to S2 pupils to improve their reading skills and increase self-confidence.
