Covenanters memorial to be unveiled in Earnock

THE new covenanter memorial in Earnock is to be unveiled next week.

It will replace a monument destroyed by vandals late last year.

A piper-led procession will take place in Lady Watson Gardens on Sunday, September 7, at 2.45pm.

At 3pm, a service will be held prior to the memorial’s unveiling, and guests include president of the Scottish Covenanters Memorial Association (SCMA) Bill Niven and Townhill Primary School choir.

The original monument was carved in 1881 by the first baronet of Earnock Sir John Watson, but was removed in 1995 after being vandalised.

In 2005, a cairn was designed and erected by John Reardon, a member of the SCMA - but it too was destroyed by vandals in 2007.

The new memorial will be unveiled by the sixth baronet of Earnock, Sir Simon Watson, who is the first baronet’s great-grandson.
